Volunteer sign-up form

The Active Transportation Alliance is seeking dedicated volunteers to help make the 2009 Boulevard Lakefront Tour on Sunday, September 13, 2009, a huge success. Grab a friend or a group of friends and join us to make this ride safe and fun for everyone.

Please see our list of volunteer descriptions for information on the many positions available.

Day-of-event volunteers receive:

  • A volunteer T-shirt
  • A free picnic lunch
  • An invitation to participate in a preview ride of the 27-mile route before the event
  • An invitation to our annual volunteer appreciation party
  • Volunteer orientation

Groups of 10 of more volunteers from nonprofits, community organizations, schools or corporations can receive a monetary donation.

For corporate volunteer groups, the Active Transportation Alliance will make a donation on the corporation's behalf to a qualified charity or nonprofit.

Pre-Event Volunteer Opportunities


Packet Pickup (click for more information) I'd like to help out with packet pick-up the following day(s).

Tuesday, September 8: 9:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m.
Wednesday, September 9: 9:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m.
Thursday, September 10: 9:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m.
Friday, September 11: 9:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m.
Saturday, September 12: 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.

Event Set-Up Truck loading at Active Trans' office (9 W. Hubbard St.):
Saturday, September 12, 9:00 a.m.-noon

Festival Set-up at Washington Park - S. Cottage Grove & 54th St.:
Saturday, September 12, noon-5:00 p.m.
Signage Team Signage will be put up on Saturday, September 12 , and taken down after the ride on Sunday, September 13. You will be able to ride the 15-, 27-,or 35-mile route the day of the event for free!

Palmer Square rest stop (Palmer & Kedzie)
Dan Ryan Woods rest stop (West 83rd St.)
Pullman rest stop (Forrestville & East 111th St.)

Ride Marshals (medic and/or repair) I know how to change a tire, make small mechanical adjustments and I own a bicycle pump and repair tools.
I am a trained physician, nurse or paramedic.
Course Marshals There are over 32 intersections where we are seeking Course Marshals. Please check the box below to get more information about specific Course Marshal positions.

Volunteer Waiver:

"I promise not to bite off more than I can chew and to finish all that I bite off."

I volunteer my services to the Active Transportation Alliance. These services are performed by my own free choice.

I agree to fulfill my volunteer responsibilities to the best of my ability and to abide by the safety and work standards established by the Active Transportation Alliance.

I understand that there are some risks involved in my volunteer assignment and I will study, understand and avoid any and all dangers. I will NOT accept any work assignment for which I feel I am not qualified or prepared.

I understand that I am going to have fun, work hard and make a difference! I am ready to learn more about the program. I understand that pictures of me taken while volunteering may be used in brochures, videos, etc. I grant permission for the use of my name and/or likeness relating to my participation and I waive all rights to any future compensation to which I may be entitled as a result of the use of my name or likeness.

I indemnify and hold harmless the Active Transportation Alliance, the City of Chicago, and the Chicago Park District from any and all claims made or liabilities assessed against them as a result of (i) my actions, inactions or negligence, (ii) the actions, inactions or negligence of the Active Trans Parties and others hereby indemnified, (iii) the conditions of the facilities, equipment or areas where the Bicycling is being conducted and (iv) any other harm, injury or damage caused by an occurrence related to or during Bicycling through or involving Active Trans.
